The Art of Fire Enamel

Handcrafted in Vienna through up to 100 precise steps, each FREYWILLE creation transforms enamel, gold and colour into wearable art.

Made in Vienna Since 1951

At the core of every FREYWILLE creation lies the art of fire enamel - a unique technique perfected in Vienna over decades of artistic craftsmanship. Through numerous delicate production stages, precious materials, radiant colours and pure gold are transformed into jewellery creations distinguished by their luminous depth and enduring beauty.

The FREYWILLE Process

Each FREYWILLE piece is created through an elaborate handcrafted process combining liquid enamel, artistic precision and exceptional expertise. Layer by layer, colours and gold are carefully applied and repeatedly fired to achieve the unmistakable brilliance, intensity and refined character that define FREYWILLE jewellery.

Precious Enamel - Step 1

The foundation of every FREYWILLE creation is precious enamel - finely ground glass mixed with minerals and water to create liquid glass. Specially developed colour formulas unique to FREYWILLE ensure vibrant, luminous and perfectly consistent tones across every collection. Each colour recipe is carefully documented and preserved as part of the maison’s craftsmanship heritage.

Layering & Firing - Step 2

The enamel is applied in multiple delicate layers onto a steel base and repeatedly fired at temperatures reaching approximately 820°C. Each layer requires precise colour mixing, careful cleaning and exact timing during firing. Throughout the process, every piece passes through the kiln multiple times while surplus enamel is meticulously removed by hand. In total, creating a single enamel element involves approximately 80–100 highly specialised production steps.

Gold & Artistic Detail - Step 3

FREYWILLE’s signature brilliance is created through the integration of 24kt gold and platinum details directly into the enamel. Colours are individually applied one by one, allowing extraordinary artistic precision, sophisticated relief effects and colour compositions of up to 20 distinct shades. Continuous innovation in metallic finishes, mother-of-pearl effects and enamel textures reflects decades of artistic experimentation and technical mastery.

The Final Jewellery Piece - Step 4

Once completed, the enamel becomes an intensely radiant yet delicate plate that is carefully mounted into its final jewellery setting. Rings and bangles are individually polished before assembly, while every component undergoes strict quality control and final inspection in Vienna. The result is a wearable work of art created to endure for generations.
