The History of

FREYWILLE

Wearable Works of Art

Founded in Vienna in 1951, FREYWILLE began as a small enamel workshop driven by artistic passion and craftsmanship. Over the decades, the maison evolved into an internationally recognised jewellery brand while remaining deeply connected to its Viennese roots and artistic identity.

A Viennese Maison of Artistic Jewellery

From its beginnings as a local Viennese workshop, FREYWILLE has grown into a global artistic maison known for its distinctive fire enamel creations inspired by art, culture and creativity. Today, every collection continues to reflect the brand’s original vision: transforming artistic inspiration into radiant jewellery creations with timeless elegance and unmistakable identity.

1951 - 1970

Foundations & International Recognition

Founded in 1951 in Vienna by artist Michaela Frey as the Wiener Emailmanufaktur, FREYWILLE began with handcrafted enamel objects and decorative pieces such as boxes and bowls. Early iconic designs included the Wiener Rose, created in collaboration with Augarten Porcelain. During the 1960s and 1970s, FREYWILLE expanded internationally through prestigious retailers including Harrods and collaborated with luxury maisons such as Yves Saint Laurent and Hermès. Artistic movements like Art Nouveau increasingly shaped the brand’s distinctive visual identity.

1980 - 2000

Artistic Evolution & The Hommage Era

In the 1980s, Friedrich Wille became CEO while Simone Grünberger-Wille helped define the unmistakable FREYWILLE artistic style. Bold Avantgarde aesthetics, geometric forms and vibrant colour worlds characterised the collections of this era. In the 1990s, the iconic Hommage collection series began with a first collaboration with the Fondation Claude Monet. This was followed by Gustav Klimt and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. To this day, every Hommage collection is developed in close collaboration with the artists’ foundations or rights holders. FREYWILLE expanded its boutique network across Europe and established itself as a luxury art jewellery maison. In the 2000s, the company introduced its Fine Jewellery collections, combining artistic fire enamel with even more refined luxury craftsmanship.

2010 - Today

Global Artistic Maison

From the 2010s onward, FREYWILLE continued expanding its artistic universe with collections inspired by Vincent van Gogh, Sandro Botticelli, Paul Gauguin, William Morris and many others. The 2020s introduced a new focus on influential female artists including Frida Kahlo and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, reflecting a contemporary artistic dialogue. In 2025, FREYWILLE revisited its deep connection to Art Nouveau with collections inspired by Alphonse Mucha. Today, FREYWILLE operates more than 60 boutiques worldwide and remains internationally recognised for its handcrafted fire-enamel jewellery, Viennese artistry and unique fusion of art and craftsmanship.

Forever inspired by Vienna

Vienna remains the creative soul of FREYWILLE - a city where art, heritage and culture continue to inspire every chapter of the maison’s story.
